Futon Sofa Bed for Versatility

A futon sofa bed is a versatile addition to any room. It can function as a table, couch, desk or bed, making it staple furniture for those occupying in smaller places.

Futons were originally used in Japan for sleeping. Japanese futons, however, are thinner compared to the Western futon. Moreover, these futons in Japan did not have frames and were designed in such a way that they can be folded and set aside easily. It was in the 1960s that futons became popular in the United States. Early futon versions were very much like its traditional Asian counterparts. In the 1980s, steel frames for futon mattresses were introduced. Since then, they have become an essential element in many living rooms.

Buying a futon is not something that one does every day. Therefore, before purchasing one, a lot of things need to be considered. First, determine what the futon will be mainly used for. Is it going to be used as a bed daily or just occasionally? If so, you might have to be very selective about the quality of the mattress that you will be using. Another important factor that needs to be considered when choosing a futon is its size. It should have ample room if it were to be used as a bed. Its owner should not have to crouch or be subjected into an uncomfortable position when sleeping on it. When it comes to futon style, it should be dependent on the place where it is going to be positioned. For example, if it will be used in the living room, then its style should be more formal.

In the Western context, the term “futon” refers to both the frame and the mattress. The futon frame consists of the seat rack and the back rest. The seat rack is where the lower part of a human’s body rests on when sitting while the back rest is where one’s back is leaning in a sitting position. Futon frames are available in wood and metal. The latter frames are generally less expensive compared to the hardwood ones.

Once you have selected a futon frame, you can then proceed to selecting a futon mattress. Depending on your need and budget, you can choose from traditional, memory foam and innerspring mattresses. Futons are so popular today that there should be a futon sofa bed that you can buy at any price range.
